The Gondo coffee factory is a washing station located in the Murang’a region within Kenya. It supports 727 producers who deliver and process their coffee collectively at this station. Each producer is bringing in the best of what they have, hand picking cherries, and then doing a second sorting afterwords to clear out any defects. Delivered to the Gondo Coffee Factory, the coffee is ddpulped and wet processed same day, using water from eh Kananahu stream.

The coffee is then fermented for removal of mucilage for 16-18 hours, then washed and graded before being dried for proper moisture content. Hulled, graded once more, sorted and bagged, this coffee is then sent out on container to its warehouse location.

Most producers in this region have roughly 1-2 hectares. Due to the cost of education, most families in this region live in poverty, which creates a cycle that limits the ability for future opportunities. This cycle has led to many of the younger population moving out of the area towards bigger towns and cities in search of better jobs. This leaves parents and older community members to work the farms, or families leaving their farms all together to be abandoned. Yet, with this, the community has remained positive and optimistic that coffee will be what saves the region.

Hence, purchasing this offering to share, even if just a small amount, means so much to us. This coffee is a classic example of a washed Kenyan lot. Sweet, tea like and abundantly beautiful, the Murang’a Gondo lot is made up of SL 28, K7, Ruiru 11 and Batian varietals, which carry this coffee’s profile. This is a great, delicate offering that we have been loving here at the roastery and we hope you get a chance to enjoy this beautiful lot.
